I admit-- I am one of those people who reads all of the reviews but never writes them. So, *that's* how much I enjoyed Viola's free walking tour of the French Concession. Simply put-- if you want a perfect blend of historical understanding and honest insight into the nuances of contemporary Shanghai (and China, at large)-- seek out Viola (a lifelong resident) and glean her wisdom (also delivered with a great deal of refreshing humor).

I recently moved to Shanghai and started renting an apartment in the French Concession. However I have been pretty clueless about my area and in truth about the history of SH in general. Cometh the hour cometh the man and in steps super tour guide Sihao! In the space of a few hours Sihao gave a really informative summary of the FC with an interesting blend of history, culture, politics and life. If I could give 6 stars I would so don't miss out!

The French Concession has now no secrets for us: this walking tour was thorough, and also a real pleasure to follow, thanks to Sihao, a very competent guide who found the perfect balance between riveting explanations and a fun, relaxed way of discovering the whole area. Viola and Mary also took part in this tour, and gave us their really useful insights, as well as their unceasing energy. The four of us had a great time, and that convinced me in taking another (different) tour on the following day :))

Our guide Sihao was very knowledgeable about the history of the French Concession. And his friendly demeanor certainly made our walking tour very enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed walking through the old lane houses, having a glimpse of how the local residents actually live. It was a perfect day to walk as the mild autumn weather was ideal!

I took the French Concession tour with Sihao and it was an incredible experience. The tour covers many historical spots in the area and you get to learn about the significance of the French concession in modern Chinese history. The guide (Sihao) is very knowledgeable about the topic and was really great at keeping the group engaged (he even entertained our slightly controversial questions with the best attitude and answers!) I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in an interactive way to experience the history of Shanghai.

The French Concession Walking tour was a quick way to get to know a part of Shanghai’s history. Sihao brought us to quaint alleys and shared interesting tidbits on the influence of the French people on Shanghai’s art and culture. Sihao was very personable, well-versed in English, and a great conversationalist! He was also thoughtful - there were parents in our group who had their kids in strollers and he tried to find an alternate way for them to easily enter one of the spots. I would highly recommend joining his tours. 😊
